I’ve known Katy for several years (we used to teach Pure Barre together), and it’s been so neat to watch her get Katy Benoit Fine Art started over the past few months. Katy has such a kind spirit — she’s one of those people who makes you feel relaxed, calm, and at home when you’re around her — and I feel like that energy really comes through in her work. It also means that working with Katy on a custom commission piece — which I did when she painted pieces for both Maggie’s room and Vance’s nursery — is such a delight. She listens to your vision, asks great questions to really hone in on what you’re looking for, and sends updates throughout the painting process asking for your input so you’re sure to end up with a piece you absolutely adore. Here’s the art she created for our kids:

Katy’s a busy mom of three (her kids are 6, 4, and 2), and she says she realized at the start of the pandemic last year — when the world came to a screeching halt — that she needed to find a way to carve out space and create an escape just for her. She’d painted in college and said she suddenly had this image come to mind that she just had to bring to life, and so she dragged out a few kids’ paints and old canvases. She began sharing her work on social media at a friend’s urging and someone wanted to buy a piece. Then someone else asked to buy another. Before long, Katy Benoit Fine Art was born.
Now, Katy uses her kids’ afternoon rest time and evenings once they’re asleep to paint, and she finds time to paint almost every day.
“It has been the greatest job getting to fill the walls of people’s homes with my work,” Katy said. “I think the commission process is extra sweet. All artwork tells a story, but commissioned work tells the client’s story, and I get to help bring that story to color and life.”
Katy describes her work as “full of movement and color,” which seems like the perfect description to me. She says she’s inspired mostly by nature, the daily world around her, and by music. “My favorite thing about art is that it captures color, movement, and emotion, and I push for each of those elements in my work,” she shared.
