Each spring, I’m always hopeful that the movies released in the summer will be worthwhile. After all, there’s something delicious about summertime movies, which often help fill a rainy day at the beach, are date night destinations, or act as an escape from the heat on an especially sweltering day.
Here’s what I hope to see this summer:
- I hate Family Guy. I really, really dislike that show. And so the fact that I kind of want to see Ted, a movie about a bad-mouthed teddy bear by the creator of Family Guy, is a bit puzzling. I think it’s this trailer that won me over:
- From what I hear, Moonrise Kingdom is a Wes Anderson film that even Wes Anderson haters will appreciate. And I’m a Wes Anderson fan, so I feel certain I’ll love this flick. Plus, the cast includes the likes of Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, and David Schwartzman. Pretty quality, no? It’s about young love and quirky adventure, and Paste magazine calls it “…whimsical and, yes, precious, but it is so in the very best sense of the word.”:
- Like the rest of the world, I’m thrilled about the release of the third chapter in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises. I’m pretty stoked about additions to the cast like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anne Hathaway, and Liam Neeson, and this looks to be as action-packed as its two predecessors:
- Who else is dying to see Pixar’s latest flick, Brave? I’m always in support of kid-friendly films that put strong girl characters in the spotlight (à la Disney’s Mulan), and this movie certainly fits that description. (Actually, it’s Pixar’s first film with a female lead.) If you’ve seen a trailer of the film, you’ve certainly noticed the main character, Merida’s, remarkable curly red hair. In fact, Pixar spent a year developing new software in order to achieve exactly the mesmerizing animation they were going for:
- Steve Carell’s latest film, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, looks downright adorable. (The trailer reminds me of Carell’s lovable portrayal of a downtrodden dad in Dan in Real Life.) The oft-recreated story line of boy-tries-to-find-long-lost-love is spiced up with the threat of apocalypse looming in the near future:
- I know very little about The Campaign, a film slated for an August release, but the fact that it includes both Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis means it gets an automatic spot on the list. The fact that it chronicles the fictional journey of two dueling North Carolina politicians with presidential dreams? Even better. (Oh, and enjoy this narrated intro to the trailer, too.):
